In a powerful initiative to combat gender-based violence during the 16 days of activism from November 25 to December 10, 2023, Trinity College took a proactive step by hosting a one-day self-defense workshop for girls and women on November 28, 2023. The event, held in the college yard, aimed to empower participants and raise awareness about the prevention of violence against women and girls, aligning with this year's activism slogan, "Unite! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls."
Mr. Giri Bahadur Sunar, a trailblazer in girls and women empowerment self-defense training in Nepal, and supported by Sher Bahadur Sunar, the workshop drew over 150 enthusiastic participants. The focus of the training encompassed non-physical self-defense techniques, including situational awareness, verbal self-defense, false surrender self-defense, and legal self-defense.
The physical self-defense segment equipped participants with practical skills, utilizing everyday items such as mobile phones, keys, pens, perfumes, paper spray, and utensils as improvised weapons. The training also covered a range of tricks, techniques, and fighting strategies for physical defense.
Trinity College, committed to the safety and empowerment of its female students, incorporates the girls and women empowerment self-defense training into its annual curriculum. This strategic effort not only ensures the students' safety but also enhances their knowledge and preparedness regarding gender-based violence. The success of this impactful event was made possible through the coordination efforts of Mr. Manoj Baisya, the Coordinator, ECA at Trinity College.
